In August 2021 we decided it was time to buy electric. I was driving a Peugeot 3008 purchased in 2017 and it was time for change. My requirements were simple; long range (at least 250 miles), fast charging and a flat load to the rear (no well) as we need to get golf clubs in and out easily.

It was quite hard doing the initial research because the information is hard to find online, but I narrowed it down to a shortlist of 3: Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and VW id4. After visiting the dealers and test driving them, I plumped for the Hyundai. The Tesla is an amazing machine but just too austere for me, and the VW rather shockingly did not do fast charge. The Hyundai with its 15 minutes to 80%, modern looks and top spec interior was irresistible! I ordered at the end of August, paid the deposit and was told to expect delivery in November.

To get prepared I researched home charging solutions, and chose an EO Mini Pro because it had the smallest footprint. I booked installation for October. What the time came, the 7kW charger was duly installed. Everything was ready for the car …

… and at the beginning of November the salesman contacted me to say there was a delay, and the new date was December …

… and December became January, and then March, until finally 8 months after I ordered the car it was delivered in April 2022 on Easter weekend.

Using the granny charger in France

The hotel we are in offered us the ability to charge the car whilst here; I assumed they had a charging station from one of the networks (these are often in hotel car parks), so at least 7kW. But when we arrived we saw that they just have a standard electric socket outside next to two of the parking bays! This means we need to use the granny charger. To recap, the “granny charger” is a charging cable that plugs in to a normal electric socket. The one that comes with the Ioniq 5 can be set to draw 6, 8 or 10 amps, meaning about 1.4kW, 1.8kW or 2.3kW. But of course it has a UK plug. I researched using a travel adapter, and as I suspected it is not recommended. The Grand Tour: Chercher le borne de récharge!

 Today we learned a lesson; the charging station is not always where you think it is - sometimes you have to play the game “find the charging station”! You can see from the map in the last post that our first stop was to be “Orleans Nord”. The location is right next to the autoroute service area called “Orleans Saran” so we assumed that this meant the chargers were in the service area. But when we got there we could not find them! There were a couple of charging bays, but not the IONITY chargers we wanted, and we did not know how to use them (we did not try too hard). So we consulted the ChargeMyHyundai app, and sure enough the IONITY chargers are actually in a car park off the autoroute at the next exit! The app very nicely has a “navigate” button that opens Google or Apple maps and shows you the way. We grabbed a coffee and a croissant and then set off. Tesla chargers at Rivesaltes

 This morning we set off to our next destination - St Paul Trois Chateaux. The charging plan was as follows: Try the Tesla chargers at Rivesaltes. These actually show on the Tesla map as available for non-Teslas, and since it is just north of Perpignan we thought we would give it a try. Charge at the IONITY chargers 70km away at the Narbonne Vinassan services on the A9. Now, there was a big question mark as to whether we could actually use these because we were not sure what side of the autoroute they are, and if you can access them from either direction. It really was not clear to either of us from the maps and apps; or maybe we were just being a bit thick! Final charge at the services at Tavel Sud on the A9, about 180km down the road, to give us a good charge for touristy touring tomorrow.
