The hotel has a type 2 AC charger!

 This hotel has a type 2 AC charger. The car is currently hooked up to it.


At the last hotel they just had a normal socket which we could not use because we don’t have a heavy duty adapter for the granny charger (see my post about it). This charger is giving me 10.6kW which is not bad. The hotel is charging me a flat fee of €10 to use it, so it means the more I charge the cheaper it is per kWh. Since we spent the day touring around, I reckon I’ll get about 60% charge, meaning about €0.23 per kWh; much cheaper than using the IONITY chargers on the autoroute!

The lesson here is that when planning your trip abroad, it always pays to ask the hotels if they have an EV charger, and if so what kind it is. Not only is it cheaper (it would have been free at the last hotel if only we’d had the right adapter), it is also very convenient to charge the car whilst you are otherwise engaged, just like at home!

The hotel we are in offered us the ability to charge the car whilst here; I assumed they had a charging station from one of the networks (these are often in hotel car parks), so at least 7kW. But when we arrived we saw that they just have a standard electric socket outside next to two of the parking bays! This means we need to use the granny charger. To recap, the “granny charger” is a charging cable that plugs in to a normal electric socket. The one that comes with the Ioniq 5 can be set to draw 6, 8 or 10 amps, meaning about 1.4kW, 1.8kW or 2.3kW. But of course it has a UK plug. I researched using a travel adapter, and as I suspected it is not recommended. The Grand Tour: Chercher le borne de récharge!

 Today we learned a lesson; the charging station is not always where you think it is - sometimes you have to play the game “find the charging station”! You can see from the map in the last post that our first stop was to be “Orleans Nord”. The location is right next to the autoroute service area called “Orleans Saran” so we assumed that this meant the chargers were in the service area. But when we got there we could not find them! There were a couple of charging bays, but not the IONITY chargers we wanted, and we did not know how to use them (we did not try too hard). So we consulted the ChargeMyHyundai app, and sure enough the IONITY chargers are actually in a car park off the autoroute at the next exit! The app very nicely has a “navigate” button that opens Google or Apple maps and shows you the way. We grabbed a coffee and a croissant and then set off. The Grand Tour: Day 1

I am writing from the Kyriad hotel in Beauvais; first stopover on the Grand Tour to France and Spain. We stopped at the Stop24 services on the M20 to use the IONITY chargers there. I used the ChargeMyHyundai app which gives us lucky Hyundai owners a year's free membership of IONITY and a preferential charging rate. All went very smoothly. In France we decided to be very conservative, at least at first, to avoid any stress! Our first stop was at the Aire de la Baie de Somme. There are 4 IONITY superchargers here (350kW), and Tesla chargers. All the IONITY chargers were busy, so I thought I’d try a Tesla. But despite the press announcements that all Tesla chargers in France and Belgium are open to non-Tesla drivers, theTesla app told me there where no chargers nearby! So I parked up in the IONITY bays and the guy currently using one of them told me he would be done in 2 minutes, and so he was.
